The Beginning Brass Quintet Series is designed for younger brass players getting their first experience with a
small ensemble (and weekend warriors who may not have the time to keep their chops at a professional level and
professionals who like to keep some less taxing arrangements in their concert book).
Instrument ranges are written to Level 2 guidelines, and there are no sixteenth note rhythms. Many phrases
begin with several instruments starting in unison to help young players feel confident and find their partials
before moving into harmony with the rest of the quintet. These arrangements are very straightforward, not
too lengthy, and use a minimum of close harmonies (in other words, the French horn and trombone won't spend the
whole chart a half step away from each other). Despite these guidelines, the pieces all sound very professional
and are suitable for any concert setting. This collection also serves as an excellent introduction to
essential classical repertoire.
Infernal Gallop is an energetic arrangement of the Offenbach classic -- also known as the "Can Can".
The quintet sounds very full but uses a lot of clever unisons to take some of the pressure off of the individual parts.
Ode to Joy is a sweet rendition of the Beethoven melody, suitable for a concert or a wedding. Each
instrument gets a bit of rest and a chance to play a piece of the song.
In the Hall of the Mountain King is the very recognizable melody from Grieg's "Peer Gynt". The tuba
starts with the melody and then trades it off with the trumpets. Lots of dynamics and tempo changes for a
young quintet to learn to deal with.
Swan Lake is the beautiful, haunting Opus 20 by Tchaikovsky. Even professionals will find this arrangement
enjoyable to perform.
Toreador Song from Bizet's "Carmen" is probably the most challenging piece in this collection. The tempo
will be determined by the two trumpets and the speed with which they can single or double tongue the melody at the
beginning and end. If performed well, it will bring down the house!
