This is a 3-movevment piece commissioned in 2020 and dedicated to Tony Collins, who was a longtime coach at
the Humboldt Brass Chamber Music Workshop.
"Revival", begins with a solemn opening statement then moves into a bright gospel theme, first by the
trumpet, then tuba, then the horn. Trombone has a "shout" solo, then the piece moves into a
tricky 5/4 section featuring the horn. The trumpet takes over and "preaches" to the choir,
until the opening statement is revisited.
"Deprival" is a sultry tango which recalls one of Zack's earlier works ("Tango for Jam
Jam"). Trumpet and trombone are featured early on, then the tuba takes over with a bit of
tricky melody. Horn follows with a brash solo, then the trumpet has an extended (written)
cadenza.
"Survival" is a frantic closer reminiscent of a Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse" and
the "Green Hornet Theme". After the opening section, the piece takes a turn into a classic
swing feel featuring the trombone, then back to the frantic opening featuring the tuba moving their
valves REALLY fast. The closing section will be a challenge for everyone! Zack's
composition is written for advanced players looking for a proper challenge that an audience will
find entertaining.
