This new composition was honored as first runner-up in the 2013 Humboldt Brass Composition Competition.
The four movement piece runs about 11 minutes when performed as a whole, and comes with program notes explaining
the piece. Originally scored for 2 tpts, 2 hrns, 2 trbs, and tuba, it also comes with a Flugelhorn sub part
which replaces one of the French horns.
Movement 1, "Calypso Honeymoon", is a festive calypso introducing many of the themes that will be explored
throughout the composition.
Movement 2, "A Love Undying", is a horn feature over a bossa nova groove.
Movement 3, "March of the Zombies", is a tango built over a pulsating tuba line with occasional
shrieks and wails by other instruments.
Movement 4, "El Mariachi de la Muerta", is a paso doble featuring the trumpet and concluding with an
epic battle between lovers and zombies.
This is a piece which will certainly be talked about long after the performance.
(A brass quintet version is also available.)
