"3 Criminal Inventions" is an original composition by Zack which was originally
commissioned as a Nonet by Tony Clements and BCMW in 2018. This is a
reduction for brass quintet (since there aren't a lot of nonets out there!). The
overall theme portrays different types of crime, from high tension jewel heist, to
confidence trick, to bank robbery. Total running time for the Suite is about
6:30. The First movement begins with the calm before the storm, then moves into the
high energy heist motifs. You should be able to envision a late 1970's heist film
with this as the background -- ticking timers, close calls, and the smooth getaway.
The Second movement is a macabre waltz with a beautiful theme that is constantly
tweaked with an air of mystery.  Just when you think you know where it's going,
it takes an unexpected turn. The Third movement is in 5/4 and moves with quick
desperation incorporating a short 16th note motif reminiscent of "Flight of the
Bumble Bee" and plenty of pulsating tuba.
Listen to a synthesized sound clip (about a minute of each movement).
